A spoonful of thick golden Friday Hut Market Active Jellybush Manuka honey is being taken from a medicinal looking amber jar.

Active Honey | FAQs (and MGOs)

Active Honey is made by bees foraging from select varieties of Leptospermum plants native to both Australia and New Zealand. It is widely accepted as having a range of therapeutic uses, most peer reviewed research has studied oral & topical application for wounds, burns and ulcers.
Our offering has been tested and certified as active by the University of the Sunshine Coast with a potency of MG0 550+

- I've heard of Manuka and Jellybush but what is Active Honey, are they all the same?

  • For the past several years a debate has raged between Australia and New Zealand over use of the name Manuka. As an AU$430m industry there's little wonder that folks feel protective.
  • Many Australian beekeepers use the term Active Jellybush, citing the unmistakably thick jelly-like texture of the honey.
  • As the discussion continues, we're respectfully opting out and calling it what it is: Active Honey as tested and certified by The University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia.

- Explain the rating please.

(warning - nerdy bee science ahead)

  • Whilst regular honey has antibacterial properties, Active Honey has increased levels of a compound called methylglyoxal (MGO) which comes from the conversion of a third compound - bear with me - dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It's the DHA which is found in high concentration within the nectar of certain varieties of Leptospermum.
  • The MGO rating is a simple way to grade the level of methylglyoxal present in your honey.
  • It's the rating that you really want to look out for. If you see cheaper jars of Active Jellybush or Manuka Honey, they are likely rated around MGO 30+, MGO 50+ or even MGO 150+. These are table grade honeys. They will probably taste beautiful but will have little to no impact for therapeutic or medical applications.

Honestly, it's a bit of a minefield out there and the best way to ensure you're getting what you want is to read, read, read.
To avoid the confusion we've foregone a range of grades, instead offering a single potently active jar of honey. Do what you feel!
